Overview
METAQUANTICS brings together and displays data from public agencies, international organizations, open data projects and third-party services. That data still belongs to its owners and remains subject to each owner’s licence and terms: using the platform does not transfer any rights over it.
This page brings together, in one place:
- the policy that decides which sources may be added and which were refused;
- the data sources in the connector catalog, the data files shipped with the platform and the base maps, each with its licence;
- the main software libraries and typefaces, and how to attribute the data when you reuse it.
Licensing policy
New sources are only added to the platform under licences that allow commercial use with attribution:
- Public domain: works without copyright, such as data from United States government agencies (USGS, NOAA, NASA, FAA, NGA) and Natural Earth.
- CC0 dedication to the public domain; citing the source is a courtesy, not an obligation.
- CC BY Creative Commons Attribution: free use, including commercial use, as long as the source is credited, the licence is indicated and changes are disclosed.
- ODbL Open Database License, the OpenStreetMap licence: free use with attribution, and derived databases distributed under the same licence.
Derivatives keep the licence
Files generated from ODbL or CC BY-SA data stay under the licence of their origin. This applies to the Latin American administrative boundaries published under ODbL by geoBoundaries and to Uruguay’s second-level boundaries (CC BY-SA 3.0).
How each source is recorded
Every source enters the connector catalog with its declared licence, and the catalog’s automated check fails if any source has no licence. A licence is only recorded when it was read on the provider’s official page or was already documented. Everything else is marked “under review”, which does not mean the source is either free or forbidden.
Sources whose terms do not allow commercial use are marked as restricted. With the commercial profile enabled, the licence check rejects these sources and the public API stops delivering their data, stating what was left out. Some queries to non-commercial sources are switched off by default.
Sources that predate the policy
Some sources in use were integrated before this policy and are still under their own terms, restricted or under review, as the data sources table shows. They stay flagged until they are verified, licensed or replaced.
Refused sources
These sources were assessed and refused because their terms do not allow the intended use. None of them is used on the platform.

Data sources
This table is generated from the platform’s connector catalog, the same list used in the licence check. Each row is a third-party data provider, with the licence terms as recorded and how many of that provider’s sources the platform queries. METAQUANTICS’s own data and infrastructure services are not listed here.
How to read the classification
- Public domain: no copyright or dedicated to the public domain (CC0); citing the source is recommended.
- Open with attribution: CC BY, CC BY-SA, ODbL, Open Government Licence or public government data; the source must be credited.
- Provider terms: governed by the provider’s own terms of use, with conditions on attribution, usage limits or redistribution.
- Restricted: non-commercial, personal or educational use, or commercial use only with the owner’s permission.
- Under review: the licence has not yet been confirmed at the official source or is awaiting human review; this does not mean the source is either free or forbidden.

Data shipped with the platform
Some datasets are downloaded once, reduced by versioned scripts and served as static files by the platform itself: the browser reads these files without contacting the owner. The layers that use them show the source credit in the tooltip, the legend or the map footer.

The cover photos of the Store and of the Simulation models are illustrative. Some are under the Unsplash License, which allows commercial use without mandatory attribution; the rest were provided by the METAQUANTICS team.
Base maps and satellite imagery
Base maps are not stored on the platform: the browser fetches the tiles directly from each provider when the map is shown. Each service’s licence applies to the display and also to map screenshots and exports.

Esri satellite imagery
Esri imagery is not under an open licence and therefore falls outside the source policy on this page. Commercial use depends on an ArcGIS account or contract and is awaiting a decision: keep the layer under contract or replace it with an open source. Until then, it is not treated as cleared for commercial use.

elkjs under the EPL-2.0
elkjs is distributed under EPL-2.0 or GPL-3.0-or-later, at the user’s choice. METAQUANTICS uses it under the EPL-2.0, unmodified; any future change to elkjs itself will be made available under the EPL-2.0.

How to attribute when reusing
If you reuse data seen on the platform, in an export, screenshot, report or API response, the obligations of the owner’s licence apply. In practice:
- credit the original source, not just METAQUANTICS, using the credit shown in the tables above or on the layer itself;
- indicate the licence and, for CC BY licences, state whether the data was changed (clipped, simplified or aggregated);
- distribute databases derived from ODbL or CC BY-SA data under the same licence;
- do not imply endorsement: agencies such as NGA, FEMA, CDC and UNHCR require that their name and seal do not suggest approval of your product;
- respect the restrictions of restricted or under-review sources and, when in doubt, check the owner’s terms before reusing.
